Community Oncology
Our mission is to provide patients with the highest quality, personalized care closer to home. As part of Fred Hutch, our community oncologists offer patients multidisciplinary tumor board opinions, clinical trials and expertise in treating a variety of cancers.

“I see myself as an educator first. I want you to genuinely understand your condition, what treatment can and can't do and what side effects to expect. Informed patients can make better decisions for themselves.”

— Dr. Hanson

How do you approach providing patient care?

As a generalist in hematology and medical oncology, I see the full spectrum of blood disorders and cancers, and I approach every patient as an individual with their own goals, family and social support and needs. My background in religious studies has also shaped how I practice: it has given me a real appreciation for the sacred, often unspoken moments shared with patients, and it grounds my commitment to caring for the whole person, not just the disease.

What brought you to oncology?

I am drawn to hematology and oncology because I get to walk alongside patients during some of the most impactful, often scary, and challenging moments of their lives. I don't take that trust lightly. Intellectually, I love the complexity of blood disorders and cancers: the diagnostic puzzle-solving and the therapeutic decision-making that go into figuring out the best path for each person. But just as important to me are the relationships. I want to know my patients as people, not just diagnoses, and to individualize care around what matters to you and your family.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
