Symptoms of Liver Cancer
Liver cancer symptoms can be subtle at first and may resemble those caused by other liver conditions. Liver cancer often doesn’t cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages. As the cancer grows, you may experience one or more of the following:
- Losing weight without trying
- Losing your appetite
- Pain in your belly or near your right shoulder blade or in your back
- A lump, discomfort or feeling of fullness in the upper right belly, just below the ribs
- A swollen belly
- Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
- Being unusually tired or weak
- Nausea or vomiting
- Feeling full after eating a small amount
- Bruising or bleeding easily
- Pale or chalky bowel movements or dark urine
- Itchy skin
- Fever
These symptoms are often caused by conditions other than cancer, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis or other liver diseases. If you notice any of these changes, talk with your primary care provider. They can help you understand what may be causing your symptoms and whether you need testing.

Liver Cancer Symptoms and Signs FAQ
Your provider will ask about your symptoms, your health history and your family history. They may ask about factors that increase your risk for liver disease or cancer. You’ll also have a physical exam so your provider can look for signs that help explain what you’ve been experiencing.
