Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center has a longstanding commitment to training the next generation of scientific leaders and providing professional development opportunities for our faculty. Our education and training houses educational programs for patients, healthcare professionals including providers and nurses, faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral and medical fellows, as well as internships and programs for secondary school teachers, and high school and undergraduate students.
Our programs span the biomedical disciplines and research interests pursued at Fred Hutch — from basic, human biological, clinical, and public health sciences research to a range of cancers and infectious diseases.
Patient Education
Our patient and family education team works with experts at Fred Hutch to create resources that are clear, accurate and useful. We rely on trusted cancer organizations to provide valuable information, including handouts on a variety of topics and links to resources. Our educational resources include videos explaining common side effects of cancer treatment and how to manage these side effects.
Healthcare Professionals
Our oncology-specific education services focus on current and emerging standards of care and treatment options along the cancer care continuum with the goal of improving patient outcomes. Many leadership and professional development opportunities are available to Fred Hutch providers and nurses.
Elementary Students
We offer special programs for elementary-aged students to spark an early interest in science. This includes community partnership programs for young scientists and storytellers.
High School Students
For high school students who are interested in science, hands-on experience alongside pioneering researchers in biological sciences, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, cancer prevention, epidemiology and biostatistics can be life-changing.
Undergraduate Students
We offer an array of internships to undergraduates and recent college graduates who are interested in a career in science, medicine and research.
Teachers
The Science Education Partnership (SEP) exemplifies a true partnership between scientists and educators. Since 1991, SEP has paired research scientists with over 600 secondary school science teachers in Washington state.
Post-Baccalaureate Scholars
The Fred Hutch Postbaccalaureate Scholar Program is for individuals who would benefit from research experience and training to ensure that they are competitive when applying to biomedical PhD programs providing them the tools to ensure their success in the lab.
Graduate Students
Fred Hutch offers a wide range of training opportunities for post-baccalaureate and graduate students, including a University of Washington/Fred Hutch jointly administered PhD program in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Students also can participate in dual degree graduate programs.
Postdoctoral & Clinical Fellows
Postdoctoral fellows are found in all five research divisions at Fred Hutch. Prospective fellows should contact the faculty member with whom they would like to work. Fellows receive stipends/salaries in accordance with the Washington State minimum exempt wage.
Faculty
We believe that training and mentoring are essential to cultivating faculty leadership. Formal classroom training, professional development seminars, and panel discussions enable our faculty to gain the skills and knowledge they need to build and manage their research labs.
