Operational Leadership

This team is responsible for the daily activities associated with maintaining the CARET Biorepository; working closely with investigators in the development of their proposals; reviewing and processing proposals requesting to use the CARET samples and/or data; providing statistical support to investigators utilizing CARET samples; maintaining the CARET website; strategizing on ways to maximize the CARET samples; pulling and shipping CARET samples; and maintaining Institutional Review Board compliance.

Marian Neuhouser, PhD, RD

Marian Neuhouser, PhD, RD

Marian Neuhouser, PhD, RD, is a nutritional epidemiologist and is the Principal Investigator of CARET. She has been a CARET investigator since 2000 and assumed the role of CARET PI in 2023. Dr. Neuhouser brings over 20 years of experience and leadership in large cancer prevention trials including the Women’s Health Initiative and the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial, as well as controlled feeding dietary interventions, behavioral dietary interventions and large observational cohorts. Dr. Neuhouser received her Ph.D. in nutritional sciences from the University of Washington.

Matthew Triplette, MD, MPH

Matthew Triplette, MD, MPH

Matthew Triplette, MD, MPH, is a pulmonologist with interests in lung cancer screening, including barriers, facilitators, and potential disparities in screening practices. Dr. Triplette became a CARET Co-Investigator in 2023 as the Fred Hutch subaward PI for IARC’s “Lung Early Proteins Project: A LEAP toward implementing biomarkers in lung cancer screening” (R01CA262164). Dr. Triplette received his M.D. and M.P.H. from the University of North Carolina.

Matt Barnett, MS

Matt Barnett, MS

Matt Barnett, MS, is the CARET Analytic Section Manager. He has over 30 years of experience with CARET, starting as a Coordinating Center statistician in 1992. Mr. Barnett consults with scientific investigators on study design issues and provides statistical analyses for publications and reports. He works with scientists and staff on study coordination procedures, providing statistical guidance in the design and development of data collection forms, data management procedures, quality control reports, and quality assurance procedures. Mr. Barnett received a Master of Science degree in biostatistics from the University of Washington.

Becky Harbine

Becky Harbine

Becky Harbine, is the Project Coordinator for CARET, working closely with investigators in the coordination of their research projects. Ms. Harbine has been with CARET since 1996 has extensive historical knowledge of the CARET Study and Biorepository. She is responsible for tracking project proposals, as well as coordinating and conducting all CARET biospecimen pulls and shipments. She monitors Institutional Review Board compliance, assists with development of study policies and procedures, and maintains the CARET freezers and integrity of the CARET specimens. Ms. Harbine received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Washington University.

Scientific Leadership

The CARET Scientific Review Committee comprises the CARET Investigators and CARET Co-Investigators. This committee is charged with reviewing study proposals requesting the use of CARET specimens and/or data.

Chu Chen, MS, PhD, DABCC

Chu Chen, MS, PhD, DABCC

Chu Chen, MS, PhD, DABCC, served as the Principal Investigator of CARET from 2018 to 2023 and continues to serve as a consultant and member of the CARET Scientific Review Committee; her expertise is in molecular epidemiology, genomics, transcriptomics, and clinical chemistry.

Gary Goodman, MD, MS, served as the Principal Investigator of CARET until 2018 and continues to serve as a consultant and member of the CARET Scientific Review Committee; his expertise is in medical oncology.

Mark Thornquist, PhD, served as the Co-Principal Investigator of CARET until 2018 and continues to serve as a consultant and member of the CARET Scientific Review Committee; his expertise is in biostatistics.
