Hematology-Oncology
Medicine is a unique field where science and the humanities intersect. During one summer in college, I worked in a clinic in Cleveland and I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet people, hear their stories and try to help them. My decision to go into cancer care was influenced by a mentor I had in medical school who gave a lecture on cancer biology and the development of imatinib, one of the first targeted drug therapies for cancer. Later, I had the opportunity to follow this same professor in an outpatient clinic, where I experienced the privilege of helping patients facing this disease. From that moment on, I never considered any other specialty.
Treatment is a highly individualized pursuit on multiple levels, from the molecular to the humanistic; it should cater to your biology, unique situation, beliefs and life experiences. I strive to get to know who you are, educate you about your disease and treatment options and provide as much guidance as possible. I’m hopeful about the future of blood and bone marrow transplantation. While not every person is a good candidate for these procedures, we are constantly working to innovate new approaches and improve outcomes so that one day we can provide a cure for every patient.
Area of Clinical Practice
Adult Blood and Marrow Transplantation
Leukemia, Myelodysplastic Syndromes
My clinical expertise is centered on providing blood and marrow transplantation for patients with leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes, both cancers that affect blood-forming cells. I also treat post-transplant complications, such as graft-versus-host disease in the Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) clinic. Outside the clinic, I conduct research focused on the prevention of complications after transplantation, such as graft-versus-host disease and disease relapse.
