Medical Oncology

“Making a difference for somebody — that’s what drives me. I appreciate taking care of people and helping them find a new normal and a good quality of life.”

— Edie

What brought you to oncology and what do you value about your work?

When I first became a nurse, I was in a medical-surgical unit, and I fell in love with taking care of patients with cancer. I appreciate the opportunity to meet a person’s needs, whatever they are, for that day or even that moment when I’m seeing them.

My role now is both administrative and engaged in direct patient care. Whether I’m making a difference in the life of one of the people who reports to me, a patient or a caregiver, I just want to have an impact. I hope when a patient leaves a visit, they see a positive, even if they are dealing with negative news.

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

I want patients to have hope and to know that when I walk into a room, I am an open book. I believe in speaking honestly and openly to the level that a person can tolerate. My goal is to be respectful of each patient’s personal and cultural preferences as well as their beliefs and circumstances.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Medical oncology, benign and malignant hematology

I am an advanced registered nurse practitioner who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic. I have several years of leadership and management experience and have been a speaker at the national and international level.

My background is in community practice, so I see patients with all types of cancers. When I completed my doctorate, I felt like I was at a decision point. It seemed I could go in more of an operations and leadership direction, or I could stay in a patient care role. Being able to do both and continue to provide patient care was vitally important to me.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
