Machia prevention article details breast-cancer risk, tamoxifen

Joelle Machia, a research nurse who specializes in breast cancer prevention in the Hutch's Clinical Research Division, published a review article on breast-cancer risk and the preventive role of tamoxifen in the April issue of the American Journal of Nursing.

Nurses often play a key role in evaluating breast-cancer risk and provide counseling for women with concerns about their risk status. The paper presents an overview of recent breast-cancer risk studies, including those carried out at the Hutch, and may be a useful tool for nurses who are helping patients make treatment decisions.

Machia is program coordinator for the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene Trial, a national program to compare the safety, benefits and side effects of tamoxifen and raloxifene in woman at high risk for breast cancer.

She also was program coordinator of the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial, which demonstrated that tamoxifen cut breast cancer incidence by almost half in high-risk women.
