Medicare announced yesterday that it plans to reimburse for discussions between terminal patients and doctors about end-of-life care, a much-needed change in policy that has been lauded by many patient advocate organizations and health care providers.

Cancer patients were the star participants at a palliative care summit held May 15 in Seattle. The Palliative Care Quality Measurement Summit, co-sponsored by Fred Hutch and the University of Washington, was the latest in a series of community meetings designed to increase value and decrease the human and financial cost of cancer care.
