Arnold floor named to honor Canary Foundation

Urban, Hanash and several other early detection researchers are foundation grant recipients

The fifth floor of the Arnold Building, which houses the labs of Drs. Nicole Urban and Samir Hanash, has a new name in honor of the Cancary Foundation, which funds the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s early cancer detection research.

More than 1,700 bicycle riders participated in The Ride to Conquer Cancer June 20-21 from Vancouver, B.C., to Seattle. Funds raised from the 37 U.S. riders will go to the Canary Foundation to support early cancer detection research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Early lung-cancer detection for nonsmokers

Samir Hanash will head multi-institutional effort to find biomarkers for early detection of lung cancer in people who have never smoked

NCI's Early Detection Research Network (EDRN) and the Canary Foundation will each provide initial funding of $1 million for a study to better understand biomarkers for lung cancer that develops in people who have never smoked. Dr. Samir Hanash of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Public Health Sciences Division is the team leader for Canary Foundation-funded lung-cancer projects. He also serves as principal investigator for two of the nine studies. Dr. Muneesh Tewari of the Human Biology Division will also lead a study.
