Relief pitcher Dustin McGowan had what they call “a career year” last season for the Miami Marlins. That’s a remarkable achievement for a player who has weathered Tommy John elbow surgery as a minor leaguer, multiple injuries in the major leagues, and for the past 12 years has pitched with an insulin pump in his back pocket to keep his type 1 diabetes in check. It's that kind of pluck that also earned the 34-year-old the 52nd Hutch Award.

"When I had the opportunity to join the Hutch Award committee, I jumped at it because I knew I wanted to get involved to see what the Hutch was all about. Helping others is something that I’ve learned from the beginning from my family, but I never really knew how to give back and carry on my grandfather’s legacy until I started volunteering at the Hutch," said Scott Hutchinson, the grandson of Fred Hutch founder Dr. Bill Hutchinson
