SmART Heart Study

Study of mHealth Apps to Reduce cancer Treatment effects on the Heart

Welcome to the SmART HEART Study!

What is the SmART HEART Study?

Long-term survivors of leukemias, lymphomas, or bone marrow transplantation are more likely to have heart problems because of their treatment. This study will try to see if we can help survivors improve their heart health.

What will be asked of me?

If you choose to enroll in this study, you will be asked to:

  • Complete two clinic visits at Fred Hutch (about 6 months apart) to assess your health. We will measure blood pressure, height, weight, and fitness level. We will also draw blood to test your cholesterol and blood sugar.
  • Fill out general health and dietary questionnaires.
  • Wear a physical activity monitor for 7 days before your two health assessments.
  • Complete a heart health education session by phone or video with a study provider to review your test results and prior cancer treatment. The provider will recommend ways to manage any abnormal test results and suggest ways to improve your diet and get more exercise.
  • Use a Fitbit exercise tracker and a diet tracking program called Healthwatch for 4 months. We will provide both to you free of charge. These will give you feedback on how much you are exercising and your diet quality.

The Research Consent Form describes the SmART HEART Study in more detail.

What’s in it for me?

  • Basic health measurements done for free, including height, weight, blood pressure, and blood levels of cholesterol and sugar.
  • A copy of all these test results and the opportunity to discuss these results with the study’s physician assistant. We will also send a copy of your test results to the primary care provider you designate.
  • $100 for each clinic visit completed.
  • Use of a Fitbit device for the duration of the study, as well as software applications that could potentially increase physical activity and improve diet, which are beneficial to improving overall health.

We hope to use the information we gather from this study to improve the health and level of physical activity for other cancer survivors in the future.
