Be The Generation To End The AIDS Epidemic
The Be the Generation website was initially created under the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) HIV Vaccine Research Education Initiative (NHVREI) and later managed by the Be the Generation Bridge project. NHVREI was created by NIAID to promote awareness, understanding, and support for HIV vaccine research. Under Be the Generation Bridge, microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and treatment as prevention (TasP) were added to promote biomedical prevention research more broadly. Although both projects have ended, the commitment to provide the community with resources on HIV prevention research remains.
The website is now managed by the Legacy Project at the Office of HIV/AIDS Network Coordination (HANC), which works with the NIH-funded HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Networks to create a more integrated, collaborative, and flexible research structure.
There is currently no cure for HIV. Finding safe and effective methods to prevent the spread of HIV is our best hope. With more than 35 million people living with HIV worldwide and approximately 2 million new infections each year, the need for HIV prevention research remains urgent. A combination of prevention strategies is essential. The future of HIV prevention research depends on the understanding, trust, support, and participation of all communities. Working together, we can be the generation to end the epidemic.
