Frederick Appelbaum

Frederick Appelbaum, MD

Dr. Fred Appelbaum studies the biology and treatment of leukemias, lymphomas and other blood cancers and sees patients with these disorders. He has made numerous landmark contributions to his field. Notably, he helped develop Fred Hutch’s renowned program in blood stem cell transplantation.

Co-Chair

Dr. Kiem is a world-renowned pioneer in stem-cell and gene therapy and in the development of new gene-editing technologies. His focus has been the development of improved treatment and curative approaches for patients with genetic and infectious diseases or cancer.

Effie Wang Petersdorf

Effie Wang Petersdorf, MD

Dr. Effie Wang Petersdorf is an oncologist who studies how genetic factors influence the success of stem cell transplants. She pioneered molecular methods to compare differences between transplant donors and recipients in a key set of genes known as human leukocyte antigen, or HLA, genes.

Brenda M. Sandmaier, MD

Co-Chair

Dr. Brenda Sandmaier has focused her research on extending the benefits of transplant immunotherapy to a broader range of patients, including by developing less-toxic conditioning regimens. She has pioneered novel radioimmunotherapeutic approaches for treating patients with malignant and non-malignant blood disorders.
