“Meditations on mediation”
Mediation analysis studies the extent to which the effect of an exposure on an outcome is mediated by intervening variables. It has become extremely popular in genomics, where its application has raised several interesting new statistical questions. I will describe a few results in these directions: a surprising property of hypothesis testing in mediation models, estimation and inference for high-dimensional mediators, and connections with surrogate markers.
