Hutch School provides two program options for enrollment: the Group Program and the Patient Tutoring Program.
Our Group Program reflects our commitment to helping families stay together during a difficult time. Our school hours include a combination of academic class time, arts program, field trips, and group and individual work. The family member program runs from September through mid-June. Classroom hours are 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. each weekday.
Our Patient Tutoring Program is separate from our family member program and entails one-on-one tutoring with a teacher. Twice-weekly, one-hour sessions are most often scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 2 - 4 p.m.
If a student is a patient, he or she is encouraged to start school on arrival in Seattle. Even a short visit to see the school and meet the teachers will help students feel connected and enable us to design a program that meets individual needs. Please schedule a visit. If that’s not possible, we will come to the hospital and meet the student there.
Our goal is to provide educational continuity throughout the treatment process. We recognize the tremendous learning that occurs as a result of the medical treatment. Whether in-patient or out-patient, we will do our best to provide school in a way that best suits the needs of our patient students, primarily with 1:1 tutoring, although also in small groups (with a doctor’s approval). Typically, a patient's academic needs are met by the teachers at Hutch School, with the teachers at Children's Hospital assisting while the students are in-patients.
