‘Eco Hour’ showcases Fred Hutch’s green operations

As hosts of the monthly Network for Business Innovation and Sustainability event, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center served as a model of environmental best practices

More than 40 representatives from University of Washington, Seattle University and other local organizations came to campus Jan. 24 to wine and lightly dine while learning about sustainability at the Hutchinson Center. Eco Hour is a monthly event for the Network for Business Innovation and Sustainability—a local nonprofit that helps companies accelerate sustainability programs by learning about the best practices and successes of others.

"As a result of our sustainability program, the entire Eastlake Building utilizes less energy than the Yale Building despite being 30 percent larger and containing a state-of-the-art data center," said Scott Rusch, vice president of Facilities and Operations.

"Since 2008, we have reduced energy consumption on campus by 18 percent, while expanding our research programs and infrastructure, Rusch said. "Events like Eco Hour provide us with an opportunity to network with colleagues who share a focus on sustainability, and also showcase our state-of-the-art facilities."
