Dr. Scott Ramsey of the Public Health Sciences Division has been elected president of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR), a health-economics professional society with more than 4,100 members in 97 countries.

Ramsey will serve for three years, with one year each as president-elect, president and past president. He has previously served ISPOR as chair, Task Force on Cost-Effectiveness Analysis alongside Clinical Trials; director, 2005-2007 ISPOR Board of Directors; Chair, 12th Annual International Meeting; and chair, Value in Health Management Advisory Board.

In a vision statement Ramsey said he views the coming year as an unprecedented opportunity for health-technology assessment, as the global economic crisis drives health systems to maintain or improve health while controlling spending.

"Our discipline reaches all aspects of health care—from the development pipeline to health care delivery to assessing and improving quality, he said. "ISPOR is the organization that provides a vision and a voice between our global research and practice community and those who have and will increasingly turn to our members for guidance."

ISPOR holds meetings in North America, Europe, Asia and South America. In 2007 Ramsey took the organization's Distinguished Service Award as chair of the organization's annual international meeting, held that year in Arlington, Virginia.
