2004 Annual Report
At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, our goal is nothing less than a healthier, happier, more productive life for humankind through the eradication of cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases.
That may sound ambitious, and it is. Fortunately, we are blessed with the attributes and tools required to tackle such a lofty goal. Our interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists—including three Nobel laureates—bring a relentless pursuit and passion for health, knowledge and hope to their work and to the world.
Their work has already enabled the Hutchinson Center to accomplish great things, including pioneering bone-marrow transplantation, establishing the world’s first and largest cancer-prevention research program, serving as world headquarters for the largest international effort to develop an HIV vaccine, and many other landmarks in medical science.
What has been critical to this success in the three decades since we opened our doors is the commitment of our many financial supporters. In fiscal year 2004, these generous individuals, families, businesses, organizations and foundations donated nearly $34 million (see Financial Summary, "Research grants and contracts" and "Contributions" line items). Gifts from our 27,600 donors ranged from the "Coins for Cancer" collected by students at Issaquah’s Skyline High School to the multimillion-dollar gift from the Listwin Family Foundation.
This private funding has allowed the Hutchinson Center to ignite initiatives aimed at new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and cure disease. Among these initiatives are exciting efforts in early detection of cancer, tumor research and global health. For more information on our new research initiatives, visit www.fhcrc.org/research/. Your donations enable us to recruit the world’s best scientific minds and acquire the new technology required to accelerate this medical research. Private funding is more critical now than ever as federal funding for cancer research has flattened.
In this fiscal environment, the Hutchinson Center’s board of trustees, its Foundation board of directors and fund-raising staff have redoubled efforts to seek private gifts. It is with deep gratitude that we thank you for your loyal support of this great institution. We invite you to continue on this journey with us—a journey that ultimately will lead to a healthier world for everyone.
