As another Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end, a troubling inequity must remain front and center: Black women are being left behind by our efforts to end the suffering caused by this disease. This disparity can be narrowed with two steps: Boost research on the types of breast cancer that are more prevalent among black women, and improve outreach efforts to inform them.
Fred Hutch's Dr. Slobodan Beronja and colleagues published new findings that show healthy skin cells can fight off the cancerous tendencies of nearby cells that harbor cancer-causing mutations. Dr. Jeremy Roop, a postdoc conducting HIV research in the McElrath Lab and Computational biology in the Bloom Lab, has been named a Damon Runyan Fellow.

About 200 patients, payers, providers and policymakers gathered with Fred Hutch researchers April 7 to discuss ways to bump value and bring down costs of cancer care. The day-long event marked the fourth Value in Cancer Care Summit, sponsored by the Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research.
