In Uganda and throughout sub-Saharan Africa, cervical cancer is the most common cancer and the No. 1 cancer killer in women. Dr. Noleb Mugisha aims to help change that by taking advantage of a health care system that is already in place but until recently has focused solely on HIV prevention.

At the grand opening of the new UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre in Kampala last month, leaders of both the Uganda Cancer Institute and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center made clear that the celebration was as much about the people involved in the decade-long collaboration as it was about the alliance’s new state-of-the-art facility. That said, the building really is awesome.
