Relief pitcher Dustin McGowan had what they call “a career year” last season for the Miami Marlins. That’s a remarkable achievement for a player who has weathered Tommy John elbow surgery as a minor leaguer, multiple injuries in the major leagues, and for the past 12 years has pitched with an insulin pump in his back pocket to keep his type 1 diabetes in check. It's that kind of pluck that also earned the 34-year-old the 52nd Hutch Award.

“It was a great honor to be selected for the Hutch Award,” said Alex Gordon. “It’s really impressive and it has a lot of history. You look at some of the names [of past winners] – Mickey Mantle, George Brett, Johnny Bench. I just saw my name on the plaque outside with all of those guys. It’s definitely humbling.”
