The focus of research in the Sodora lab is to understand how HIV enters body and eventually causes AIDS. To identify correlates of protection against HIV and HIV induced disease, they utilize the SIV monkey model systems. The three areas of research in the laboratory include; 1. Assessing different monkey species with divergent clinical outcomes following SIV infection (some develop simian AIDS and others that do not); 2. Determining immunologic factors that influence oral transmission of HIV/SIV; and 3. Developing therapeutics to assist in the recovery of the immune system when antiretroviral therapy (ART) are not sufficient to induce complete immune recovery. The long-term goal of the laboratory is to apply the knowledge gained from these studies to the development of new therapies and vaccines for HIV-infected patients.
