Communications and Marketing Internship Program

The Communications & Marketing department, whose goal is to elevate the world-class discoveries of Fred Hutch to the community, the nation and the world, through evocative storytelling, compelling messaging and effective branding, is looking to fill several open intern positions in three separate areas:  Communications, Marketing, and UX Design.

Area Overview

1.  The successful Communications intern will work with media and public relations specialists to help create positive relationships and perceptions within our local community, including other businesses, employees, investors, legislators, and more. The communications intern must have strong organizational skills, solid writing and communication skills, as well as a desire to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment. He or she should be adept at writing, speaking, and interacting effectively with both internal and external parties.

2.  The UX Design team looking for a talented UX and Design intern to complement the Communications and Marketing team at Fred Hutch this summer.

  The Fred Hutch is home to interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists and the Communications team is helping tell the world about the new and innovative ways our research is helping to prevent, diagnose and treat devastating diseases. As part of our multi-disciplinary design team, you will assist with creative explorations, design revisions, comp creation, presentation design, and all associated print and/or digital collateral.

3.  The successful Marketing Intern will work with members of the Marketing team and the greater department to help position Fred Hutch as a global leader in research to prevent, detect and treat cancer and other life-threatening diseases. He/she will help ensure consistency in the brand positioning and reach while helping drive awareness of the brand throughout our local and regional community. The Marketing Intern will create positive relationships and perceptions within our community, including Fred Hutch employees, other organizations and more.


1.  Communications Intern

  • Support day-to-day functions of the Communication team
  • Prepare files, presentations, schedules, meeting minutes and agendas; monitor relevant media coverage, assemble press kits, and field telephone calls from the media
  • Assist with internal and external events
  • Track and maintain event database and campus tour requests
  • May assist in writing and editing media materials, such as press releases, newsletters, reports, and multimedia presentations
  • May assist with developing communication strategies, media plans, and market research

2.  UX Design Interns

As part of our multi-disciplinary design team, you will assist with creative explorations, design revisions, complete creation, presentation design, and all associated print and/or digital collateral.

  • Rebrand implementation support (including third-party digital channel and collateral updates)
  • Employee/community rebrand/awareness event support
  • Mariners corporate partnership support (ticket tracking, implementing details to maximize the relationship)
  • Google Grants/AdWords program tracking and enhancement recommendations
  • Mobile giving program tracking, viability assessment and enhancement recommendations
  • Day-to-day functional support within the Marketing team


1.  Communications Intern

  • Strong interest in media or public relations
  • Communications and/or marketing experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Superb organization skills and attention to detail
  • Nimble learner and attentive listener
  • Typing and word processing skills (knowledge of Word and Excel)
  • TEAM PLAYER with sparkle factor

2.  UX Design Interns

  • Be pursuing or possess a BA, BFA, HCI, or other design-related degree
  • Present a diverse portfolio of print and web design samples
  • Be able to develop complex, conceptual solutions
  • Be able to solve complex problems using logical reasoning
  • Be extremely attentive to minor details
  • Possess exceptional communication and presentation skills, including the ability to translate ideas into tangible design solutions while clearly articulating the reasoning behind them
  • Maintain a solid understanding of standard design principles, including grid systems, color and typography
  • Be a dedicated team member with an enthusiastic, positive attitude
  • Be proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign and content management systems (Wordpress, Blogger)

3.  Marketing Intern

  • Strong interest in marketing strategy and execution
  • Communications and/or marketing experience or course work
  • Superb organization skills, follow through and attention to detail
  • Nimble learner and attentive listener
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Adept at interacting effectively and professionally with both internal and external parties
  • Desire to work in a dynamic and team-oriented environment
  • Proficient in Word and Excel
